One of my favourite novels ( as also mentioned on my profile page).... 'Tiger Hills' by Sarita Mandanna will have its US launch today, March 8. It is the first novel by the New York based Sarita, a private equity professional by day who wrote TH 'in snatched time' over a period of 5years.
The story of Tiger Hills, set in a coffee plantation in Coorg in southern India, spans five decades leading up to the WW II. It revolves around the life of its protagonist, Devi, a strikingly beautiful woman of immense passion and grit, deeply wedded to her land. Even though it has all the ingredients of a typical drama...what with its more than generous dose of passion, love ( both requited and spurned), loyalty and betrayal...the way the story unfolds is anything but typical. Sarita weaves a compelling tale which is beautiful not only for the story that it tells but also for the spell binding visuals of the terrain that are brought alive with her narrative.

This is the cover of the US edition..with the image of the white herons in flight against the backdrop of the hills....you will need to read the book to know the significance of this visual...
Here's how it looks in its Indian edition.....This image is closer to my impression of Coorg, where the novel is set, most of which is gleaned through this magnificent work of fiction itself....
If you love sweeping sagas a la Gone With The Wind and Thornbirds...then Tiger Hills is certainly the book you had been waiting for!!
