Meet the dining table...

Here's a look at our dining table around which the Pantons are now stationed. It is a classic cross-leg ( X-leg) design and the most amazing part of it is the 8'X3'6" top which is a single plank of wood..absolutely no joints anywhere!!

The legs are Burma teak and were salvaged from an antique library stand ( which contributed towards many other pieces in our home..but that is a post for another day).

The top of the table is made from 'Sapelli' wood which is a kind of African teak. The girth of the tree from which this came was well over 10 feet!! It has a lovely grain and we decided to go with the original wood color to showcase its beauty..and the color contrasts beautifully with the darker legs. This table was fabricated entirely at home by our immensely talented carpenters...

It looks even more beautiful under lights..acquiring an almost honey-colored tint ...

Here's the Panton at one end of the table adjacent to the window that overlooks our garden...

I love the crisp white against the dual wood color of the table. The dining room adjoins the open kitchen which has all dark cabinetry..I am glad we chose the classic white for the Pantons as it contrasts beautifully with all the wood and seems to merge with the marble floors at the base...

The remaining six chairs are yet to be finalised. Though initially, I was tempted to get six more of the Pantons..but after giving it some thought, I figured that it would be much more fun to mix up a couple of styles( thanks Maria for the nudge!). I plan to get four more of these and then add something dramatic at both the ends..Here are a few images that are inspiring me...

These next two rooms are the work of legendary Mr. Wolf...who has taken mixing of various styles to a whole new level...

I would really love a couple of winged (with slightly lower back) chairs at the ends of the table..

What do you think..do you like the direction I am contemplating going in? I would really appreciate if you would share your thoughts here.

That you saved this beautiful tree with all its stories still to tell says so much about what you are. Stunning. Beautiful. I'd break bread there...;)

Meenal, it's lovely to see a part of your home... the table is beautiful! I love the way the color contrasts with the darker legs. I like your direction - timeless...the madebygirl image is one of my all time fav. I posted about that in January and the post became one of the most polular posts on my blog. Yo can see all the photos here (I'm not sure if Jen posted just one or all of them...so I'm sending you the link)

I agree with Tracey. Btw I'm glad every time when I see a message from you on my blog and I'm glad every time when I see images of Vicente Wolf. I've learned so much from his books. So there is so much to see on your post today. Thanks for that. big hugs

I really like the idea of the winged chairs paired with the Pantons, it'll add some more character and detail to the whole setting!

Love the strong lines of the table and the fact that the top is one solid piece is really cool. It's going to look great.

Gorgeous table and I love love the Panton chairs- can't wait to see what else you put with them- some antique bergere type chairs (upholstered in a natural duck or faux ostrich) would look gorgeous.

thankyou all!
christine- would love to put some nice antique chairs ( i was thinking upholstered louis XV) but all depends on whether i can find them..i am also leaning towards slightly modern winged chairs..xx meenal

Hi Meenal,

Just discovered your blog and I totally love it!

I'm a British Indian who lives in London but I've just bought a little place in Lucknow. I'll definitely be using your blog for inspiration when it comes to decorating.

Did you import the Panton chairs or do you have an Indian source for them? They will look AWESOME with that monumental dining table I'm sure.

Thankyou all for your lovely cooments..your endorsement sure makes me feel very confident about my choices!!
Anonymous-thankyou for your lovely comment..vitra has the licence for panton in india as well..you could look them up on the net..they do import the chairs on order..though sometimes you may find a few pieces in stock as well..xx meenal

Thanks for the super speedy reply Meenal.

I did have the mad idea of Fed-exing my furniture but this looks like a much more sensible approach .

My new Lucknow flat will be too small for Pantons (and my pockets insufficiently deep!) but I'm SO inspired by your style x
