Today I came across the work of Spanish interior designer Nacho Polo while looking for some black & white interior inspiration. 

This particular project entailed restoring the historical memory of an early 19th century home in Madrid. The end product is truly swoon-worthy... with the old glory restored by uncovering and retaining the old architectural details and new life infused through a clever and artistic amalgamation of classic and modern design elements...

In all the rooms there is a beautiful juxtaposition of modern furniture with the traditional architectural details like the elaborate crown molding. The effect is very striking yet harmonious...

Such a gorgeous collection of chandeliers...

 If a black & white palette is too stark or daunting for you, experimenting with the look in a small space, a power room for instance, may be the best way to go...

A lot of neutral key pieces ( mainly black & white), vintage finds, a nod to her Moroccan heritage ( I spotted a Beni Ourain rug, a moroccan wedding blanket & a bone inlay chest )  and a very obvious love for all things 'brass'.

Here's to the first week of a brand new month..Happy July everyone!

From eye-sore to eye-candy:a stellar transformation...

First, the eye-candy...for first impressions count ...Take those pristine white walls, dark stained floor-boards, twin sinks, a stunning black & white claw-foot tub holding center-stage, a separate shower enclosure and still a lot of space to walk around..how can this not be stunning!! Not to miss the beautifully stocked glass cabinet. This is the master bath of UK-based Jonathan King who has chronicled its transformation on his blog, 47 Park Avenue. You need to see the 'before' image at the end of this post to really appreciate what an amazing job Jonathan has done.

The thing is, I'm not letting that ice-cream melt all over my hand! After procrastinating for some time, I've decided that dreams are not something you put on the back-burner. So, I've finally gotten down to pursuing a long-time dream of mine. I will share more details with you as things get a little more concrete. Meanwhile, I'll keep popping in and out of here..posting when I can. I do hope to have a better frequency of blogging in some time. Until then, please bear with my sporadic appearances. Runway to room...

I loved the collection by Marc Jacobs at the New York fashion week, with 'the soldier and the doll' as the underlying theme...it is poetic, charming and translates into an easy wardrobe...

The charcoal, white & burnt orange of this outfit look just as stunning...

 ...when applied to this gorgeous room... eye-catching yet restful. I love the mix of French country headboards, bone-inlay side table and the classic X-bench in that beautiful orange hue ... I am nuts about that lamp too!!

Two rooms..with their all-white color schemes paired with eclectic art walls...and touches of pink...So similar yet distinct...Though neither is my natural style..I am drawn to both...

Black & white...

I love all-white kitchens..but unfortunately they aren't the easiest to maintain..more so in my country with all the spices and oil that are used for typical Indian cooking. Therefore  a combination of black & white is really hard to beat. It is never goes out of style and works perfectly whatever be the look of your kitchen...Here are the two ends of the style spectrum...

For me the first one is ideal for cozy family meals cooked and eaten in the kitchen..while the second one would be perfect to show off to your friends..your culinary skills ( or lack thereof ) notwithstanding! And how cool is that library ladder to reach the higher cupboards ( and my favourite Tord Boontje garlands )!!

What we chose...

Today we  ordered two of these lovelies for our dining room!!! Though they will take 5-6 weeks to arrive ( from Germany)..I'm already dreaming about sitting at the head of the table..as we host dinner parties for our friends!!

Panton chair

Verner Panton's 1960's classic has been on my radar for quite some time now.I love its sculptural quality and amazing versatility. I've seen it working in practically every room and with varied interiors..be it modern, contemporary or eclectic. Here are some of my favourite dining rooms featuring this modern day classic in white ...since that's the color we have chosen:

I would have loved it if all eight could be Pantons but breaking the bank to furnish a room is not the wisest thing to do..well..not just yet! Hence begins the quest for choosing the remaining SIX!!! It's going to be a whole lot of fun..stay tuned!

Dutch explorers in medieval Italy...

When the Dutch couple Morten and Tina were looking for a holiday home to get away from their hectic life in Copenhagen..their choice fell upon Italy...A lot of research and a chance reading of an article by Giorgio Armani led them to the area around the town of Alberobello, a World Heritage Site, in the southern Puglia region.Here they combined  two medieval Trulli ( a round limestone structure with cone-shaped roof and a single room) and added some new construction alongside, to build a 300 sq mtr castle ...an ideal holiday home for the couple looking for adventure and seeking to get lost in another age...

Letting the stunning medieval architecture with its vaulted arches and rough hewn limestone take centerstage, the couple have resisted the temptation to fill it up and decorate..The largely monochromatic color scheme sees fluctuations only in terms of slight variations in the natural color of the limestone...

The beautiful arch connects the living room to the kitchen cum dining room...

Here again the furniture is minimalistic with the white dining table, an old desk from Denmark , sorrounded by Eames shell chairs and topped with Robert Dudley's now classic lamps...while the exterior evokes a little 'Lord of the Rings' feel...the decor inside is decidedly Scandinavian..

The monochrome, minilmalistic story continues in the bedroom as well...in its cave-like serene coziness...

The arched doorway leads to the ancient olive tree with a hammock that provides a perfect place to cool off when the rays of the sun turn harsh...I love how the zebra print fits right in with the ancient setting....

Finally, the lounge-podium next to the pool..where the couple have spent many a pleasant moment lost in the timeless beauty of their surroundings....Gosh..what I wouldn't give for a setting like this...stuff that dreams are made of!
