House beautiful...

Every day we come across beautiful homes on blogs and in magazines but there always are a select few that stay with us much longer than the others..we love revisiting them every now and again to get inspired.. Here is one such home that I first saw in House and Garden( May 2008) and cliched though it may sound, it was 'love at first sight'.
This  converted farmhouse on the Adriatic coast of Italy is the home to  two homewares designers and has been a sort of work in progress for the last 20 years. Redesigned and decorated by interior designer Jonathan Reed it epitomises 'Mediterranean minimalism' at its very best!

If I were to choose just one favourite aspect of this gorgeous home, it would definitely be its beautifully understated yet timelessly elegant spare bedroom...with its beautiful ceiling ..a muted color palette and that hard to beat view ( sorry for the poor scan)...the perfect guestroom in my opinion...Since this is my favourite part of the house..this is where I would like to start the tour...

An intricately inlaid Syrian chest is flanked by a pair of beds designed by Jonathan in ebonized timber. The beds were deliberately kept high to provide views through the window down to the coast...

The entrance hall is dominated by a bleached and sandblasted oak table...with  framed pressed gunnera leaves lending a quirky touch...

The main drawing room opens out into a dining area..both bearing a 'clean rustic' decor...much like the rest of the house...

A closer look...

Antique linen covers the chaise lounge...

A slightly more formal decor defines the room that the duo use for their business meetings...

An outdoor dining area on the terrace with sweeping views of the Adriatic sea...doesn't get any better than this now..or does it??

PS: I wish I could provide a link to the rest of the images and the accompanying article ( which makes for a very interesting read) but I couldn't find any images on the net and the smaller images in the magazine just weren't coming out nice through the scan. If anyone has a link please forward it to me and I'll be happy to share it here.

iPhone image of the week...

Boy sleeping soundly..or maybe building castles and slaying dragons!!

The more I looked at this image..the more it reminded me of something I had seen before...finally it just clicked in my mind that this is what it was...the child in Gustav Klimt's iconic painting 'Mother and child'!!

Meet the dining table...

Here's a look at our dining table around which the Pantons are now stationed. It is a classic cross-leg ( X-leg) design and the most amazing part of it is the 8'X3'6" top which is a single plank of wood..absolutely no joints anywhere!!

The legs are Burma teak and were salvaged from an antique library stand ( which contributed towards many other pieces in our home..but that is a post for another day).

The top of the table is made from 'Sapelli' wood which is a kind of African teak. The girth of the tree from which this came was well over 10 feet!! It has a lovely grain and we decided to go with the original wood color to showcase its beauty..and the color contrasts beautifully with the darker legs. This table was fabricated entirely at home by our immensely talented carpenters...

It looks even more beautiful under lights..acquiring an almost honey-colored tint ...

Here's the Panton at one end of the table adjacent to the window that overlooks our garden...

I love the crisp white against the dual wood color of the table. The dining room adjoins the open kitchen which has all dark cabinetry..I am glad we chose the classic white for the Pantons as it contrasts beautifully with all the wood and seems to merge with the marble floors at the base...

The remaining six chairs are yet to be finalised. Though initially, I was tempted to get six more of the Pantons..but after giving it some thought, I figured that it would be much more fun to mix up a couple of styles( thanks Maria for the nudge!). I plan to get four more of these and then add something dramatic at both the ends..Here are a few images that are inspiring me...

These next two rooms are the work of legendary Mr. Wolf...who has taken mixing of various styles to a whole new level...

I would really love a couple of winged (with slightly lower back) chairs at the ends of the table..

What do you think..do you like the direction I am contemplating going in? I would really appreciate if you would share your thoughts here.

They are here...

A pair of gorgeous Pantons arrived at our doorstep this weekend..and I couldn't be happier...you can see how lovely it looks here..though it'll be doing duty at the dining table now...

As for the remaining six...the debate is still going on...In an earlier post I had mentioned that we would mix these up with another style of chairs...but now we are very inclined to buy six more of these...Tomorrow I will introduce you to my dining table and take your expert opinion...I have a feeling the vote is going to be heavily skewed in favour of this curvacious lady!!

iPhone image of the week...

I got an iPhone 4 this past weekend and let me just admit that it is my very first iPhone..I know I have come VERY late to the party (in my defence..I do have an ipad...hope that exonerates me ). As is the case with all things  'apple'..I obviously had high expectations....Even though it is still early days..I'm happy to say that it checks all the boxes for me!!
Since I'm not much of a phone person (calling and texting isn't really my thing)...I've been busy discovering all the other features ..and the plethora of fancy photography apps have me giddy with excitement...clicking away like there's no tomorrow!!

that's my boy opening 'The Doors'...

Room inspiration - modern simplicity...

When style is inherent..one doesn't have to try too hard..It comes naturally and the simplest of things aquire a persona so striking that a room becomes very special. This room, for instance, houses some old furniture mixed with new in a simple and relaxed configuration, yet there is no denying its unique appeal. Old office chairs coverd in blue mohair , combine beautifully with a Madeline Weinrib cotton dhurrie and glass topped coffee table from Mies van der Rohe. Simple bamboo blinds on the windows, an old armoire in a corner and an eclectic mix of art over a second hand industrial console complete the no-fuss British modern look as intended by the homeowner and decorator Stephanie Lees. The bubble pendant light by George Nelson keeps the look fresh and modern...

The art collection on and over the console is inspiring. The dog and lanscape paintings are by Stephanie's late father. On the console rest some pieces by Jonathan Adler, Rosanthal and Klein Reid. The vignette, like rest of the room, is clean, crisp and unpretentious.
